Four weeks ago many Mercury employees learned that they would soon be working from home due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Teams made changes almost overnight, packing up desks, and grabbing laptops to set up their new home office in a few days’ time. This was a necessary transition that would not have been possible if not for Mercury’s powerhouse IT department. No one really knows for sure if the IT team slept at all that first weekend, chances are they worked around the clock to make their magic happen. What we didn’t see was the magic behind the curtain as IT setup our remote landscape which included making sure employees had the tools, resources and solutions to be as productive, creative and most of all secure as possible.
In record time, IT ramped up four times the number of Work from Home (WFH) employees from an average of 240 employees to 970, who deployed March 15. They increased the VPN licenses, the internet bandwidth, and firewall performance all within a two weeks’ time. Since 970 employees moved to a WFH environment and all traffic must cross the external firewall to get to/from the network, our IT heroes allocated more central processing (CPU) to the external firewall (3x) and saw significant performance improvement in speeding up the ability to analyze the traffic. To keep our tools sharp, they analyzed conference and video conference calls which have increased about 100% in duration.
A huge shout out to the IT team on a job well done and one we could not do the important work we do without! Truly Innovation That Matters right when you need it!
