Blog: Linux Kernal “Copy Fail” Vulnerability: How to Mitigate with RelianceOne™ for Linux

In April 2026, a vulnerability in the Linux kernel was reported that allows unauthorized privilege escalation. The bug was reportedly surfaced by an AI system in about an hour of scan time. So what are the impacts to defense platforms and how can you protect against this flaw?

THE VULNERABILITY

CVE-2026-31431, codenamed "Copy Fail" (CVSS 7.8, High), is a local privilege-escalation flaw in the Linux kernel's cryptographic subsystem. A logic error introduced in 2017 lets an unprivileged local user write four controlled bytes into the in-memory copy of any readable file on the system. A proof-of-concept Python script under one kilobyte is enough to modify a handful of bytes in a privileged executable -- just enough to subvert its behavior -- and gain root privileges.

The flaw affects mainline kernels from 4.14 through 6.18.21 and ships in RHEL 8/9/10, Ubuntu, SUSE, Amazon Linux, and every binary-compatible derivative. Working exploits exist for RHEL 10.1, Ubuntu 24.04, SUSE 16, and Amazon Linux 2023. The exploit is deterministic -- no race window, no kernel-offset leak -- and the same payload crosses distributions, making it a near-universal local-root primitive on un-patched fielded systems.

For long-lifecycle defense platforms -- tactical edge nodes, mission computers, C5ISR systems -- ¬emergency kernel patching is rarely an option. The fielded system must continue to resist compromise of critical algorithms, configurations, and data even after the system has been exploited.

WHY RELIANCEONE FOR LINUX HOLDS THE LINE

RelianceOne for Linux is built around a different question than most security products. Instead of asking "how do we keep the attacker out?" it asks "what happens when the attacker gets access?" The product is designed and tested under the assumption that an adversary will eventually gain root privileges -- and that mission-critical applications, data, and configurations must still survive intact when that happens.

Copy Fail is exactly the kind of flaw this design was built for. Two capabilities work together to take the teeth out of the exploit.

1. You Cannot splice() What You Cannot Open

Copy Fail works by letting an attacker arbitrarily write (via the splice() system call) to a small number of bytes in a file the system has cached in memory. On a RelianceOne-protected system, access to the files that matter -- mission applications, libraries, configurations, and data – is controlled by policies that no user on the system can modify without explicit access. Not even root.

The keys are held outside the operating system and are cryptographically bound to the specific physical hardware the system was provisioned on. As a result, to execute the attack against mission software, the adversary must run code that allows them to open a file descriptor to the files in question.

On a typical system this is simply a matter of having the necessary privileges provided by standard user-based access controls. On a system protected by RelianceOne the attacker must overcome two other protections:

•  To run exploit code the attacker must be able to start the exploit code on the system. A system configured with RelianceOne’s Allowlisting will prevent the attacker from launching many local exploits.
•  Even assuming the attacker can launch the attack, for example, if allowlisting were not enabled, the Proof of Concept (PoC) attack code requires the attacking application to open a file descriptor for reading that corresponds to the process under attack to use splice() to target the out-of-bounds write. RelianceOne’s Mandatory Access Controls (MAC) allow protected mission applications to be executed by the OS but will not permit those files to be opened for reading by any user.

2. Root No Longer Means Mission Impact
The combat-system threat model is not the enterprise IT threat model. The adversary is not dwelling, pivoting, or exfiltrating over months -- they are firing a one-shot exploit with a payload built to degrade, deny, or subvert the mission at a moment of their choosing. Cyber survivability comes down to what that payload can actually do with root and RelianceOne takes many privileges away from root. Attackers may try the following strategies to impact the mission:

• Tamper with mission software to make the platform run the wrong code - altered targeting, sensor fusion, navigation, or comms -- the payload must modify a mission binary, library, or config. RelianceOne cryptographically-authenticates every protected file at load time, and the files are encrypted with hardware-bound keys (see Section 1). The platform runs the authentic mission software or it does not run at all.
• Subvert mission software at runtime -If files at rest are out of reach, the payload will try the running system: inject code into a mission process, attach a debugger, or load a kernel module that hooks system calls underneath the application. RelianceOne refuses unsigned modules outright, and protected processes refuse debugger attachment and memory inspection regardless of UID.
• Hijack mission hardware - The payload may try to commandeer or shut down the equipment or services the mission depends on -- the radio, the sensor, the storage device, the bus to a weapons interface. RelianceOne governs hardware resource access by policy, not by user ID, so root does not grant the payload reach outside the policy the platform was fielded with.

The result is cyber resilience by design: the platform either continues to do its job or fails in a way the operator can see -- never silently subverted into working against its own side.

NET EFFECT ON COPY FAIL

• Policy denies access to protected resources regardless of who is asking.
• Mission-critical files stay encrypted and signature-verified. The targeted-byte-flip pattern at the heart of Copy Fail is defeated -- the attacker cannot aim the edit, and any edit at all is detected. Tampered code or configs will not load, so the platform never runs subverted mission software.
• Keys are tied to hardware and held outside the OS. A maliciously modified kernel cannot be used to decrypt mission assets or relocate them to another device.
• Defense-in-depth holds. A kernel CVE that is a fleet-wide emergency on a commercial Linux system is contained as a local nuisance on a RelianceOne system -- giving stakeholders breathing room and time to patch on a planned cadence rather than rushing emergency updates to fielded platforms.

BOTTOM LINE

CVE-2026-31431 is a textbook validation of the RelianceOne threat model. The vulnerability hands an attacker root; RelianceOne ensures root is not enough to compromise the mission. By keeping mission-critical files encrypted and authenticated, binding cryptographic keys to the deployed hardware, and constraining what even a root-level adversary is permitted to do, RelianceOne for Linux delivers cyber survivability at the platform level: a near-universal Linux local-root flaw is converted from a fleet-wide threat into a contained, non-mission-impact event on operationally deployed systems -- ready to drop in on RHEL and other embedded Linux distributions.
